"The following video was shot by a frum lady in Brooklyn yesterday, Tuesday, 27 December (27 Kislev) 2005 at approximately 5:20pm. She was with her 10 year old son who said "I learned that Moshiach will come on a donkey...why is he in that star?"

Perhaps this object is a foretaste of what it says in the Zohar (Shemos 8a): "one awesome star will awaken in the middle of the heavens like a purple eye flashing and sparking in the day in the eyes of the whole world."

child biting - what's the deal?

my daughter was bit earlier this week in yeshiva. she's 2 and a half. the bite got infected, and thank Gd she's doing fine. however, it makes me wonder what the real cause of this is. based on conversations i have had, evidently, biting is prevalent nowadays. does anyone have an idea what could be the root of the problem? i believe that it has something to do with sending kids to daycare at very early ages, somehow instilling frustration and an inability to communicate that frustration. any ideas and feedback are sincerely appreciated? is this a problem in israel? in yeshivas?

the director of Palestinian Media Watch talked in Riverdale tonite. he said that 90% or more of israelis don't know anything about the propaganda that is spread by palestinian media, affecting all parts of their culture and brainwashing the youth. therefore, his group is trying to implement a program to bring its message to mainstream israelis.

for my last night in germany we went to frankfurt, to the xmas market :-). the beer was good. unfortunately, my group didn't go to the former jewish section known as judengasse (jew's lane) which was a ghetto where the jews were confined for 400 years. anyway, the web site has listings of many of the houses and PEOPLE of the ghetto. i find it fascinating and maybe you will too. click on the pic below to get there:

Learning Torah Out Loud

The Gemara in Masechet Eruvin (Daf 54) discusses the importance of studying Torah verbally, rather than simply reading the material with one's eyes. To retain Torah knowledge, the Gemara explains, one must ensure that the information is absorbed throughout his body, which one accomplishes by vocalizing the words as he studies. The Shulchan Aruch Ha'Rav (code of law written by Rav Shneur Zalman of Liadi, first Rebbe of Lubavitch) goes so far as to say that one who learns silently has not fulfilled the obligation of Torah learning at all. Since this obligation is presented in the Torah with the words, "Ve'dibarta Bam" ("And you shall speak in them"), it demands that one actually speak in matters of Torah, rather than just read them.

The Pele Yo'etz (Rabbi Eliezer Papo, 1785-1826) elaborates on the importance of learning Torah out loud, rather than silently. (Listen to audio for exact quote.) He writes that the sound of Torah studied out loud and articulately "pierces the heavens" and "bring joy to G-d." Those who study silently or inarticulately forfeit a great opportunity to accrue reward and bring joy and pleasure to the Almighty, as it were. Likewise, the Magid Mesharim (the book that documents the information revealed to Rav Yosef Karo through an angel) mentions that the audible sound of Torah learning creates many angels that protect and assist a person.

Our beloved teacher, Chacham Baruch Ben Haim A”H, would enter the Bet Midrash and see the students learning silently, and he would comment, "This room is filled with Torah!" The students would initially feel gratified over having received such a compliment, but he would then explain, "The room is filled with Torah – because it is not ascending to the heavens!" Only when one verbalizes out loud the material he learns does it rise to the heavens and please the Almighty.

Therefore, one must ensure to always learn Torah aloud, rather than silently, even when he learns alone and in private.

and my daughter and my son. however, today i did get to see a fascinating shul in frankfurt, the West End Synagogue which also houses the Chabad Yeshiva Gedola. anyway, here are some beautiful pics courtesy of Yeckes.com

after checking out the shul and davening there i went to the only kosher restaurant in the city, sohars. after eating La Briute meals all week my belly was highly impressed.

i did a quick google search and found a synagogue where i'm staying and where my company is located. so i got away from this computer and went. the Darmstadt Synagogue on Wilhelm-Glassing-Str 26. this is a new synagogue, 18 years old according to the wonderful maintenance guy who let me in. Evidently, there used to be more.

Throughout germany there are older reconstructed synagogues.

The Darmstadt university library also has a 15th century haggadah

first impressions of germany

so i got into germany today, frankfurt to be exact. the car service driver drove like a maniac and it's been rainy/snowy all day AND the keyboard is configured completely weird. i got to check out the xmas fair in darmstadt where my company is located and a museum full of stuffed animals. there's a weird vibe here, but maybe it's cuz i didn't sleep all night and my digestive system is screwed up from pre-fab glatt kosher airplane food (much better than treif though).

anyway, i'm going to daven mincha and relax the rest of the evening.

oh, btw, the door locks and handles are the exact same ones as in israel...very comforting.

my bris experience

this past friday morning i finally got my bris done. it was a hatafat dam brit (extracting a drop of blood). i learned over shabbos that this type of bris is evidently a testimony of faith; i guess faith in the mohel that he's only going to draw a drop of blood and nothing more!

anyway, i went to meet the rabbi at a morning minyan on the upper east side. i drove past the huge mosque on 96th street and had to park in a parking lot. i was much more nervous before my son's bris. after the minyan the rabbi and myself went to a library room and he told me to turn away from the sefarim. everything was fine until i saw the blade. i started to freak inside but before i knew it the cutting was occurring. time stood still. i looked down and saw blood but thank Gd nothing gushing. he said everything was all set.

we celebrated all Shabbos which also happened to be parshas vayera and a shabbos dedicated to reb shlomo carlebach's yarzheit.

going to sleep now. mazel tov to Yudi and Mindy on their upcoming nuptials!

eden the band (can jews rock out?)

my wife and i actually had a date motzei shabbos. we went to makor and saw eden and piamenta (sans yossi). we both really enjoyed eden and got to talk with the band members. they were nice of enough to give us a cd (maybe that's why i'm writing about them?) the cd is really growing on me. they actually can rock and the songs are good. the thing is the audience couldn't rock. eden even played the romantics "what i like about you" (who i thin are jewish but not listed on wiki jewish american musicians list)

anyway, i know that jews have the ability to rock out, but orthodox jews have a hard time letting it out, particularly if there's no mechitza around.

rabbi cardozo spoke at HIR over shabbos. i really enjoyed his talks and i recommend checking out 613.org for many. he referred to several interesting people, Erich Fromme, Rav Lichtenstein and the reason for sleeping in jewish tradition. why do animals sleep?

we also went to chabad on shabbos day and they wanted a more kabbalistic point of view of sleep. here's what the Rebbe says. btw, the guest rabbi at chabad works on chabad.org

shemini atzeret / simchas torah in riverdale

it's great living in a liberal community and the final days of the chag were definitely an event. in HIR went to the young couples luncheon on shemini atzeret women had hakofas right on the bima and everyone was talking about women going up to the Torah for an aliyah. Chabad had an auction for aliyot that lasted way too long, or the buzz lasted way too short. it was still a great time. the shteibel had great fish and the rebbe gave a nice talk, where i understood about half the english/hebrew words.

also, my brother-in-law got engaged in Detroit and i'm looking forward to the vort in Crown Heights tonite Gd willing.

i did receive CDs from Moshe Skier. i really like his band Kaballah. they were basically the first popular YU Jewish rock band as far as i know.

a bris at 28

during rosh hashanah lunch at the wonderful patio of shira and shlomo walker it came up in conversation that i wasn't given a hebrew name at my bris. why? because i never had a real bris; i only had a circumcision at white plains hospital. then and there i decided i was going to make it happen this year. i had talked about it with my wife before we had our baby boy, but i never followed through with it.

at minyan this morning i talked to two other guys who went through the experience and said it's not bad at all. well, when it happens you're all invited to the seudah.

on another note, why is it that all the kodak moments happen on shabbos or yom tov? among other extremely cute moments my daughter ended up sleeping in the closet of our room after rolling off of the mattress.

continuing in my fasting ramblings our friend Yifat from Israel stayed by us for the holiday. she works for Livnot.

i hope your fast is going better than mine.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe says that there is nothing more complete than a broken heart; when one is broken s/he is honest and real.

For me, Israel becomes the center of my broken reality. Especially in the last few months of living here, I have become aware of incredibly complicated challenges and struggles facing its residents and those that exist around it. I think that Elul, the last month of the Jewish year, is about accepting the reality of what is and preparing to move forward to fix t. So, how do we fix? What is our tool?

During the month of Elul it is customary to recite the thirteen attributes of compassion as preparation for the upcoming year. Compassion, as defined by Chabad Chassidut, is about being sensitive to another persons soul and recognizing its divine perfection; and compassion is transcending our comfort zone out of unconditional love for the other. Maybe compassion is our key, our tool for Tikkun Olam (social reform).

A pretty clear example of compassion is our Forefather Avraham, who interrupts his conversation with G-d to greet three thirsty nomads at the entrance of his desert tent. Out of compassion and sensetivity for his fellow person, Avraham leaves his comfort zone of conversation with G-d, to attend to their needs. He shows us that loving G-d and loving or fellow is the same thing; the whole point of cultivating a love for G-d is to lead us for love of other beings.

On the eve of this New Year, may we all be blessed to cultivate and experience true compassion and love for each other and may this year be one of fixing and regrowth.

anyway, my wife and i had a date with our 3 month old to a screening of the new flick "Ushpizin". i highly recommend it. i even got to talk to the director in the lobby because my kid was a little too loud. i know, you shouldn't bring little babies to a movie, however this was a free screening at Stern College, so it doesn't count. this happens to be the first time my wife and i have been to a movie since we had our first child (over 2 years).

btw, at the above gig there was a slight altercation when we were finished playing where one perturbed gentleman complained about the volume of the PA. an elder gentlemen was actually defending the volume (which is exactly the opposite of any normal gig). anyway, what was funny was that we had no control over the volume. gotta love rock and roll!

I'm a huge fan of Perry, the founder of Lollapalooza and singer for Jane's Addiction, Porno for Pyros and Psi-com (great CD). anyway, he's appearing on the Chabad Telethon. i'm psyched!
